Caterpillar is known for its large construction equipment, and its name can be seen across the globe. The company is so well-known that they’ve been able to license and market a line of clothing and work boots under their recognizable logo.
While many people are aware of the equipment they make, it often comes as a surprise to find out that they also sell some financial products and insurance to their customers. The company was founded in 1925 with the merger of two companies in California. It wasn’t until 1986 that the company moved to Illinois. It’s currently located in Deerfield.

If you know the phrase, Nothing Runs Like a Deere, then you’ve heard of Deere Company. This company was started in 1837 by John Deere in Rutland, Vermont. While the company is hugely successful today, it moved from Vermont to Illinois in 1836 to escape bankruptcy.
The following year, he opened a large shop and served as a general repairman in the town. As a blacksmith, he manufactured many tools, but his plow put him on the map. He also revolutionized the way orders were processed.
Instead of waiting for an order and then making it, he began making many at a time and let people see what they were buying before they bought it, and the people loved that they got the item the day they bought it. The company has grown significantly, and their green and yellow tractors are just as iconic as their deer logo.

This company’s name is a bit lesser known than the two preceding giants. CNH Industrial is a multinational corporation with joint Italian-American ownership that’s headquartered in the United Kingdom. They’re best known for designing, producing, and selling agricultural and construction equipment.
Their products are produced under the brands Case IH and New Holland – companies that may be a bit more familiar to the average person. They also specialize in vehicles, powertrains for industrial and marine applications, and a worldwide presence in several different areas.
CNH came about through many different mergers and acquisitions. Most notably, the merger of Case Corporation and New Holland N.V. in 1999.

2019 Annual Revenue: $28 billion
ABB Limited was previously known as ASEA Brown Boveri and is a Swedish-Swiss multinational corporation located in Zurich. They focus their attention on robotics, power, heavy electrical equipment, and automation. The company emerged from the 1987 merger of ASEA and BBC Brown Boveri to become ABB Asea Brown Boveri.
Immediately, the new company began collecting other companies through acquisitions. By 1999, they decided to let go of their train-building business and focus on traction motors and electric components. Other companies were divested, and by 2002 the company reported its first-ever loss.
Today, they are very interested in electric propulsion and electrification, motion, robotics, process automation, and power grids.

Linde AG is an international tech company that has two business segments. Their manufacturing segment focuses on industrial trucks. Linde got its start in 1875 when Carl von Linde invented the refrigeration machine and formed a company a few years later.
The company had wide interests in the years that followed, but they centered around the refrigeration and cooling business somehow. The company dove into the manufacturing side of things pretty heavily when they needed engines to move their refrigeration equipment.
They were manufacturing the items needed to move other things that they had manufactured – pretty ingenious. The Guldner Aschaffenburg division was formed, and by 1907 their first diesel engines were built. Interestingly, as their other divisions grew, they decided to leave refrigeration behind in 2004.

Daikin Industries Limited is a multinational air conditioning and manufacturing company headquartered in Osaka, Japan. The company invented variable refrigerant flow air conditioners. Daikin was initially founded in 1924, and by 1963 they had developed a revolutionary product in the cooling industry that they called Daiflon.
The company changed names a few times until 1982, when it landed on the current name. In 2004 the company entered the U.S. market, and by 2006, they acquired McQuay International, a company focused on designing, manufacturing, and selling industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning products.
They followed that acquisition quickly with the purchase of OYL Industries and became a major player in the HVAC business. Of significant note is the company’s Daikin Texas Technology Park, the fifth largest factory globally at more than 4.2 million square feet.

Komatsu America. Tokyo, Japan
2019 Annual Revenue: $22.5 billion
Another Japanese leader, Komatsu, is a multinational company known for manufacturing construction, mining, forestry, and military equipment. They make diesel engines and industrial equipment. While Caterpillar holds the record as the largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, it’s Komatsu that comes in second.
Komatsu began in 1921 officially, but it had its start before that. It was initially part of the Takeuchi Mining Industry and made industrial tools for that company. Eventually, their growth was large enough to spin off, and it became its own company.
Agricultural tractors became the first large machine that the company produced, and then they produced them for the Japanese military. That grew to include bulldozers, tanks, and howitzers. After World War II ended, the focus was on non-military bulldozers and forklifts, and they started using diesel engines.
Expansion and growth became the company’s focus, and they have continued to grow and expand their portfolio of products and acquisitions since.

Ferguson. Reading, UK

Ferguson was formerly known as Wolseley and is a British company focused on plumbing and heating products. While the company is British based, it has a large amount of its business from the United States, which is why it states for changing its name to its brand name Ferguson Enterprises, a United States company.
Wolseley got its start in 1887, making sheep shearing machinery. The company was headed by a young and driven man, Herbert Austin. He constantly looked for new projects and designed cars, which turned into a small business acquired by Vickers, Sons, and Maxim.
After the war ended, the demand for wool decreased, and becoming diversified became essential to the company’s growth. In 1960, mergers and acquisitions began. Part of their acquisition moves was the purchase of Ferguson in 1982, allowing them access into the United States market.
By 2017 the company decided to rebrand the parent company to reflect that the Ferguson portion of their company was the most lucrative. They hold the Wolseley name in Canada and the United Kingdom, where they have name recognition, but otherwise, they’re known as Ferguson.

Kubota Corporation is a Japanese company that focuses on manufacturing tractors and heavy equipment.
They produce agriculture, construction, vending machines, water purification, sewage treatment, and air conditioning. This company got its start back in 1890 as a foundry, and they began production of castings for weighing equipment and daily commodities.
The company was first known as Oide Chuzo-jo, but by 1897 they changed to Kubota Tekko-jo. The oil and oil engine business was good for them and allowed them to continue expanding.
By 1953 the company entered the construction equipment business, following that with developing and commercializing the first farm tractor in Japan in 1960.
Their expansions continued as they developed more products and began acquiring other companies. Their diversified holdings are quite impressive and change fairly regularly.

Ingersoll-Rand PLC. Dublin, Ireland

In 1871 Simon Ingersoll founded a company called the Ingersoll Rock Drill Company. That same year, Addison Rand and his brother Jasper Rand, Jr. created the Rand Drill Company. Both companies were located in New York and provided key equipment that helped establish the landscape that is New York and Washington D.C. today.
In 1905, the two companies merged to form Ingersoll Rand. They began their approach of growth through acquisitions immediately.
By the 1920s, the company was supplying diesel engines for trains and had developed a solid reputation. Interestingly, on a similar timeline, the Gardner Denver Company grew after the first effective speed controls for steam engines.
Gardner Denver also began expanding its portfolio and became a leader in compressed air and vacuum technology. In 2019 the two companies combined to lead the field of mission-critical flow creation and industrial technologies.
