However, it is becoming less common to hold this position without an associate's degree and, more preferably, a bachelor's degree. Though an accounting assistant is an entry-level position within the accounting department or firm, there is not much room for growth within the field without a degree.
Entry-level accounting assistants work as junior members of an accounting department and report to accountants or senior bookkeepers. Their responsibilities include entering financial information into databases, filing documents, and verifying the accuracy of invoice information and monthly statements.
This is all common training and experience for a person to move into an accountant or senior bookkeeping position. This is why employers look for advanced education, as these positions are held to high-quality standards, and people who fill them have to meet certain baseline requirements.
Professional certification is also an option if an accounting assistant wants to get a position without a degree. The National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers (NACPB) offers accreditation as a Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB). This accreditation is optional, but it can make up for a lack of experience.
