University Hospitals paramedic job description

Qualifications

The Sr. Paramedic must be able to pass a medical evaluation and a respirator fit test and wear an N95 particulate filter respirator mask in accordance with PEOSHA standards as a condition of employment. It is desirable that the Sr. Paramedic speak Spanish. The Sr. Paramedic must have at least four (4) years emergency 9-1-1 EMS paramedic experience with at least one (1) year of experience at University Hospital within the last four (4) years. (Per Diem experience is not counted towards the one (1) year of University Hospital experience). It is preferred that the Paramedic have urban EMS experience. It is preferred that the Sr. Paramedic have at least four (4) years of EMS driving experience with satisfactory driving record. It is preferred that the Sr. Paramedic possess a valid Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or an International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) provider card.

Credential Required:

  • Active, valid certification as a NJ Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic or NJ Mobile Intensive Care Nurse
  • Driver's license with NJ driving privileges. Driver's license must be in accordance with the DOT/MVC regulations for the type/size/weight of the vehicle(s) as assigned. Must be an authorized driver approved by Logistical Services.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for the Healthcare Provider
  • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider OR Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals -Advanced (PEPP-A) Provider

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The Sr. Paramedic must be in excellent physical condition and will, on a routine and daily basis, be required to see colors, hear voice, phone, and radio communications, read, speak, and communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, smell, sit, stand, walk, lift, operate a motor vehicle, and operate computer, wireless, and other electronic equipment. The Sr. Paramedic will, on a routine and daily basis, reach with hands and arms and use hands to finger, handle or feel. Good manual dexterity and intermittent moderate to heavy physical exertion are required when performing job activities. The Sr. Paramedic must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. frequently and up to 125 lbs. occasionally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The Sr. Paramedic must be able to work in all weather and environmental conditions, including varying or extreme temperatures, and lift and move patients in all circumstances. The Sr. Paramedic must be able to perform all duties consistent with providing BLS and ALS in the pre-hospital environment. The Paramedic will be intermittently exposed to moderate or greater noise and subject to unpredictable situations and patient crises, both medical and psychiatric. The Sr. Paramedic may occasionally be exposed to patients exhibiting assaultive behaviors. There is a potential risk of exposure to blood-borne and respiratory pathogens for the Sr. Paramedic which requires the use of personal protective equipment. In certain situations, the Sr. Paramedic may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, run, or jump. The Sr. Paramedic may, in rare circumstances, be required to work under austere conditions such as disaster settings, dangerous situations or hazardous environments.

Under the supervision and direction of the Provider and Registered Nurse, provides direct patient care necessary for efficient functioning of the Emergency Department consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of Emory Healthcare.

Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Operates as a customer service champion, keeping patients and providers informed, providing information and updates to patients, apologizing for waits, demonstrating caring, compassion, and concern, demonstrating a sense of urgency, advocating for pain management, and ensuring that patients can get help at any time.

Administers medication, oral or by injection, and performs phlebotomy procedures under a Physician's or RN's direction / Protocol or order. Inserts peripheral IVs, intraosseous devices, administers IV fluids without additives and maintains prescribed IV flow rates.
Observes and documents condition of infusion sites. Removes IV lines as directed by RN or provider. Applies slings, sling-n-swathe, finger splints, application of first-aid dressings, and noninvasive orthopedic devices. Clean and dress wounds, as appropriate. Follows Emory Healthcare isolation protocols, demonstrates appropriate use of PPE, and performs hand washing according to Emory Healthcare policies and procedures. Transports unmonitored patients to inpatient departments as needed, transports stable monitored patients to med-tele, or accompanies RN to transport patients to critical or progressive care units. Assists by performing vital signs, obtaining 12 lead EKGs and documents completion of test after giving results to physician for sign off. Initiates cardiac monitoring, demonstrates ability to detect dysrhythmias and notifies the assigned nurse, charge nurse, and/or provider of abnormalities. Initiates oxygen therapy as directed by RN or Physician. Access electronic medical records as necessary for job duties, and document interventions according to Emory Healthcare policies, procedures, and protocols.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion/graduation from an accredited Paramedic program. 2 years of clinical experience as a licensed/certified paramedic.
