The scheduled hours for this position are from 08:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays on a regular weekly basis. This position will also cover the same 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM shift on any official firm-recognized holiday.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide a security presence in the lobby of Covington and Burling's office building.
Ensure only authorized personnel enter Covington's access-controlled areas.
Intervene if there is a security-related incident in the lobby.
Ensure staff, employees, clients, and property are secure and protected.
Read, respond, and resolve staff and employee service requests through email and phone correspondence.
Conduct safety and security patrols of firm space.
Provide escorts for Covington vendors.
Respond to medical emergencies and provide aid.
Maintain daily security log for after-hours security operations.
Ensure proper notification, distribution, and escalation of security events and reports.
Manage and issue authorized visitor and vendor passes and employee credentials.
Monitor Security access control, camera, and alarm systems and report any discrepancies.
Perform other duties as assigned.

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) is a specialized unit within the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division that provides full-time tactical support to the Presidential Protective Division. WORK SCHEDULE: Newly appointed Uniformed Division Officers normally work a 40-hour workweek on a set schedule (e.g., 6:30 am - 3:00 pm, 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm, or 10:30 pm - 7:00 am shifts). Workdays and shifts will vary depending on assignment and manpower requirements.

* Well-trimmed, neat mustaches and beards are permitted. The length and bulk of the mustache or beard shall not exceed more than a quarter of an inch.
* Employment is subject to successful completion of a medical exam, which includes rigorous fitness standards. Medical exam consists of blood work, drug screening, height, weight, stress test, EKG, vision, hearing, and body fat.
* Body fat will be measured using a body composition analyzer at the time of the medical exam.
* Vision requirements: For distance, corrected 20/20 or better binocularly with at least 20/40 in each eye. Uncorrected distant visual acuity should be 20/100 or better binocularly.

* Completion of a psychological exam, which includes a Personal History Questionnaire, the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) Exam, the Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI) Exam, and a structured psychological interview with a clinical psychologist.
* Successful completion of a Physical Abilities Test (PAT): The PAT will consist of four events, completed as one continuously timed exam. The maximum allowable time (regardless of age or gender) is three minutes and forty-five seconds (3:45).
* Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which will include employment references dating back 10 years, personal references, driving history, credit history, criminal history, drug history, and academic records.
* Failure to provide correct information, or omitting information, at any point during your application will be grounds for termination from the hiring process.

* Retirement - The Federal Law Enforcement Retirement System offered by the Supreme Court of the United States is a special variant of the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) offered to most U.S. government employees. Law Enforcement FERS is a three-part retirement program:
* The first part is a defined-benefit plan (annuity) calculated by applying the average of the highest three years of earnings (high-3) to the length of service of an employee. Police annuitants receive 1.7% of their high-3 for the first 20 years of their service, and 1% for each additional year. This translates to 34% of the high-3 for police officers retiring after 20 years of service, and 39% if retiring after 25 years.
* The second part is the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), which is a defined-contribution pension (savings account). Employees may contribute up to the IRS maximum, and the Court will match any contributions up to 5% of base salary;
* As Supreme Court Police Officers are able (and required) to retire before they are eligible to apply for social security, a FERS supplement is paid to compensate until age 62;
* Employees with prior military service may buy back their active duty military time to be added to their length of service for the purposes of the annuity calculation. Military time cannot, however, be added to the length of service for determining retirement eligibility;
* Educational Assistance - Up to $5,000 per calendar year is available for eligible employees based on budget approval and the relevance of the requested courses to enhance job performance. A signed agreement committing the employee to repaying any amounts paid by the Court if the employee discontinues service from the Court within one year of completing the course is required.

This phase consists of an Orientation. It provides the applicant with an overview of the USCP and its hiring process.
Qualifications
Must have completed any of the following: FLETC UPTP; FLETA accredited military or other equivalent police training program; or CBP training programs (USBPI or CBPOPT). Certificate must be included with application.
Must be current Law Enforcement and possess 9 months of law enforcement experience post training at time of application. Must possess 52 weeks of law enforcement experience at time of appointment.
Must be current law enforcement employed outside of USCP.
Examination Phase
The Examination Phase consists of psychological, medical and polygraph examinations. This will be a candidate's first required visit to our office in Washington, D.C. during the hiring process. Efforts will be made to schedule these examinations consecutively to eliminate return visits to complete the examinations.
●Psychological - Candidates complete a battery of psychological assessments and a clinical interview. The psychological examination will last approximately four to six hours. Candidates are encouraged to be well-rested and eat prior to the examination.
The psychological exam will occur online and require the use of a desktop or laptop computer, camera, and microphone.
●Medical - The medical examination will determine if a candidate is medically qualified to perform the functional requirements of the job. Candidates will be required to fast (abstain from food) prior to the medical examination.
●Polygraph - The polygraph examination is used to confirm information obtained through the selection process.
Background Investigation
The final phase of the selection process requires candidates to undergo a full background investigation that will include a thorough review and verification of the candidate's employment history, employer, residential, and personal references, in depth criminal and credit history, and academic records.

Age Requirements - Sworn officer positions with the USCP are subject to the mandatory retirement provisions of the Capitol Police Retirement Act, which requires an officer to separate/retire from the USCP by age 57, but as the result of current critical mission requirement, the age has been increased to 59.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old at time of appointment and ordinarily not older than 37. However, the maximum entry age has been increased to 39 years of age at the time of appointment (or 40 years of age if the individual turns 40 in the same month of their initial appointment), with required mandatory retirement after 20 years of Federal law enforcement service (e.g., employed at 39 years of age and retire at 59 years of age).
● As a lateral transfer, you may be older than age 39 only if you are currently serving in or you previously served in, a Federal civilian law enforcement position that is subject to the mandatory retirement rules AND the years of law enforcement you already served PLUS the expected years you will serve as a USCP law enforcement officer, will allow you to accumulate at least 20 years of combined total Federal law enforcement service by age 59. If age 39 or above, must provide an SF-50 with application that indicates retirement coverage by special law enforcement retirement provisions.

Valid Driver's License -- Applicants must possess a valid U.S. driver's license that has not been revoked or under suspension for the past one (1) year.
Criminal History Check -- Must successfully pass a comprehensive criminal history check of the past 10 years.

Background Investigation -- Must successfully complete all components of the USCP full field background investigation.
There are few automatic grounds for rejection in the USCP background investigation process. Issues of misconduct, such as illegal drug use, arrests, or convictions may not be automatically disqualifying. However, deliberate misstatements, omissions, or intentionally withholding required information at any phase of the hiring process will result in a candidate's disqualification regardless of the nature or reason for the misstatement or omission. The primary reason candidates fail a background investigation is due to deliberately withholding or omitting material facts. The USCP offers a competitive starting salary of $83,362. Upon validation of current annual base salary, selectees whose base salary meets or exceeds this starting salary will receive a base salary offer that equals or exceeds their current annual base salary. A recruitment bonus will be provided. $5,000 will be provided following appointment with another $5,000 provided following completion of 18 months of service. Provision of these payments requires the execution of a two year service agreement with the Department. General Medical Requirements: As determined by the Office of Personnel Management, the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

The Supreme Court of the United States Police is a Federal law enforcement agency that derives its authority from United States Code 40 U.S.C. 6121. The Supreme Court Police enforce Federal and District of Columbia laws and regulations, as well as enforce regulations governing the Supreme Court Building and grounds prescribed by the Marshal and approved by the Chief Justice of the United States. * Officers are prohibited from having visible body markings (including, but not limited to: tattoos, body art, facial piercings, gauges, and brandings) on the head or neck (above the collar), hands, and fingers (any area from wrist bone to fingertips).
* Hair of female officers shall not exceed more than four (4) inches (to include being restrained by hair restraints) below the top of the collar. Hair color shall consist of only natural hair colors.
* Hair of male officers shall not extend more than half an inch below the top of the collar. Hair color shall consist of only natural hair colors.
* Well-trimmed, neat mustaches and beards are permitted. The length and bulk of the mustache or beard shall not exceed more than a quarter of an inch.
* Employment is subject to successful completion of a medical exam, which includes rigorous fitness standards. Medical exam consists of blood work, drug screening, height, weight, stress test, EKG, vision, hearing, and body fat.
* Body fat will be measured using a body composition analyzer at the time of the medical exam.
* Vision requirements: For distance, corrected 20/20 or better binocularly with at least 20/40 in each eye. Uncorrected distant visual acuity should be 20/100 or better binocularly.
* Colorblindness: Applicant must be able to pass the Ishihara's Test for Color Deficiency.
* Hearing Requirements: Applicant must be able to pass the hearing test without the use of hearing aids.
* Police Officer Selection Test (POST): The Police Officer Selection Test requirement is waived for approved lateral/certified candidates.
* Completion of a psychological exam, which includes a Personal History Questionnaire, the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) Exam, the Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI) Exam, and a structured psychological interview with a clinical psychologist.
* Successful completion of a Physical Abilities Test (PAT): The PAT will consist of four events, completed as one continuously timed exam. The maximum allowable time (regardless of age or gender) is three minutes and forty-five seconds (3:45).
* Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which will include employment references dating back 10 years, personal references, driving history, credit history, criminal history, drug history, and academic records.
* Failure to provide correct information, or omitting information, at any point during your application will be grounds for termination from the hiring process.

* Applicants must have no record of felony convictions, and must not currently be involved in any pending criminal charges.

Working for the Supreme Court Police offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes the following:
* Sick Leave - Employees earn 104 hours of sick leave per year that accrues without limit. Sick leave not utilized at the time of retirement will be added to the annuitant's length of service when calculating their retirement benefit.
* Annual Leave - Employees earn annual leave at the following rates: 13 days per year for the first three years of service, 20 days after three years of service, and 26 days every year after 15 years of service. Employees may carry over a maximum of 240 hours (30 days) of annual leave from one calendar year to the next;
* Overtime - Supreme Court Police Officers working overtime are eligible to earn monetary pay or compensatory time at a rate of 1.5 times their derived hourly pay;
* Premium Pay - Supreme Court Police Officers working the hours between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM are eligible to earn Night Differential at a rate of 10% of their derived hourly pay. Sunday premium is earned at a rate of 25% of their derived hourly pay;
* Student Loan Repayment - The Court offers up to $10,000 per year, subject to budget availability and applicable limits;

* Retirement - The Federal Law Enforcement Retirement System offered by the Supreme Court of the United States is a special variant of the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) offered to most U.S. government employees. Law Enforcement FERS is a three-part retirement program:
* The first part is a defined-benefit plan (annuity) calculated by applying the average of the highest three years of earnings (high-3) to the length of service of an employee. Police annuitants receive 1.7% of their high-3 for the first 20 years of their service, and 1% for each additional year. This translates to 34% of the high-3 for police officers retiring after 20 years of service, and 39% if retiring after 25 years.
* The second part is the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), which is a defined-contribution pension (savings account). Employees may contribute up to the IRS maximum, and the Court will match any contributions up to 5% of base salary;
* The third part of the FERS benefit is access to social security. As Supreme Court Police Officers are able (and required) to retire before they are eligible to apply for social security, a FERS supplement is paid to compensate until age 62;
* Employees with prior military service may buy back their active duty military time to be added to their length of service for the purposes of the annuity calculation. Military time cannot, however, be added to the length of service for determining retirement eligibility;
* Educational Assistance - Up to $5,000 per calendar year is available for eligible employees based on budget approval and the relevance of the requested courses to enhance job performance. A signed agreement committing the employee to repaying any amounts paid by the Court if the employee discontinues service from the Court within one year of completing the course is required.

This determination will be made on a case-by-case basis for those with federal experience who have previously graduated from the UPTP at FLETC. Initial Assessment Phase Following the pre-employment screening, candidates may be invited to participate in the Initial Assessment Phase of the USCP hiring process, all facets of which will be conducted virtually at a location of their choice. This phase consists of an Orientation and Police Officer Selection Test (POST). The Initial Assessment Phase measures a candidate's initial suitability for the position of Police Officer. It also provides the applicant with an overview of the USCP and its hiring process.
Qualifications
The Initial Assessment Phase consists of two components:
Orientation Session - An overview of the USCP mission, hiring process, training, and employment opportunities.
Written Exam - The Police Officer Selection Test (POST) will test the candidate's knowledge of basic math, reading, and grammar. A passing score of at least 70% (seventy percent) must be obtained in each section.
The Orientation and POST will require candidates to use a video conferencing system.
Note: All online portions of the hiring process require the use of a desktop or laptop computer. The use of cell phones and tablets will NOT be allowed for video conferencing. It is highly recommended that all candidates become familiar with the use of their computer's webcam and microphone.
Applicants who successfully complete the Initial Assessment Phase will be issued a Conditional Offer of Employment and will enter the Examination Phase of the hiring process.
Examination Phase
The Examination Phase consists of psychological, medical and polygraph examinations. This will be a candidate's first required visit to our office in Washington, D.C. during the hiring process. Efforts will be made to schedule these examinations consecutively to eliminate return visits to complete the examinations.
●Psychological - Candidates complete a battery of psychological assessments and a clinical interview. The psychological examination will last approximately four to six hours. Candidates are encouraged to be well-rested and eat prior to the examination.
The psychological exam will occur online and require the use of a desktop or laptop computer, camera, and microphone.
●Medical - The medical examination will determine if a candidate is medically qualified to perform the functional requirements of the job. Candidates will be required to fast (abstain from food) prior to the medical examination.
●Polygraph - The polygraph examination is used to confirm information obtained through the selection process.
Physical Readiness Test (PRT) - The PRT consists of three events: a timed 300-meter run, push-up test, and a 1.5-mile run.
Background Investigation
The final phase of the selection process requires candidates to undergo a full background investigation that will include a thorough review and verification of the candidate's employment history, employer, residential, and personal references, in depth criminal and credit history, and academic records.

Age Requirements - Sworn officer positions with the USCP are subject to the mandatory retirement provisions of the Capitol Police Retirement Act, which requires an officer to separate/retire from the USCP by age 57, but as the result of current critical mission requirement, the age has been increased to 59.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old at time of appointment and ordinarily not older than 37. However, the maximum entry age has been increased to 39 years of age at the time of appointment (or 40 years of age if the individual turns 40 in the same month of their initial appointment), with required mandatory retirement after 20 years of Federal law enforcement service (e.g., employed at 39 years of age and retire at 59 years of age).

Valid Driver's License -- Applicants must possess a valid U.S. driver's license that has not been revoked or under suspension for the past one (1) year.

Duties
During the course of their careers, Uniformed Division Officers carry out assignments in protection. Duties include:
* Safeguarding the White House complex, the Vice President's residence, and other designated facilities, as well as providing security for foreign missions and embassies.
* Traveling in support of the Presidential, Vice Presidential, and foreign heads of state/government missions.
* Enforcing mandated protective responsibilities as described under Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056A.

The Counter Sniper Team (CS) is a specialized unit within the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division that provides global long-range observation and tactical support to U.S. Secret Service protective details. On order, CS will also provide support to designated protectees, protected venues, and National Special Security Events (NSSEs). For more information about the CS position, click here.

* U.S. Citizenship is required.
* Possess a current valid driver's license. (Effective May 7, 2025, all applicants are required to have their REAL ID driver's license.)
* Be at least age 20 and less than age 37 at the time you receive a conditional offer of employment unless you have previous service in a Federal Civilian Law Enforcement position covered by special law enforcement or firefighter retirement provisions, including early or mandatory retirement. Applicants with veterans' preference must receive a conditional offer of employment prior to reaching age 40 to continue in the application process.
* Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
* Disclose any prior drug use, attempted use, and/or experimentation.
* Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory. You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, unless you received a pardon or your conviction was expunged or set aside.
* Complete 12 weeks of intensive training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA or Artesia, NM and 18 weeks of specialized training at the James J. * Completion of a 12-week CS Selection and Basic Training.
* Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.
* Be appointed to this position under a limited-term Schedule B excepted appointment which is 3 years and 120 days. Upon completion of this period, you will either be converted to career status or separated based on the expiration of the appointment.
* Possess uncorrected visual acuity of no worse than 20/100 binocular. Possess corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye. (Note: Lasik, ALK, RK, and PRK corrective eye surgeries are acceptable eye surgeries for Uniformed Division Officer applicants. Applicants will be considered eligible for the Uniformed Division Officer position provided specific visual tests are passed. The following are waiting periods for visual tests: Lasik-2 months after surgery, PRK-6 months after surgery, and ALK and RK-one year after surgery)
* You must successfully complete and pass the Ishihara Color Vision Test.

* Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 25 decibels (A.S.A. or equivalent I.S.O.) in either ear in the 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz ranges. Applicants must be able to hear the whispered voice at 15 feet with each ear without the use of a hearing aid.
* Obtain a Top-Secret Clearance and retain it during your career.
* Use your official name on your application as it appears on your valid government identification (i.e., Real ID Driver's License, State ID, Passport.)
You qualify for the LE-01 grade level (starting salary $$75,134.00) if you meet the following requirements:
* Possess, at a minimum, a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency.
* Be the age of 20 at the time of application. Must be 21 at the time of appointment.
Ideal candidates should possess ONE of the SEVEN categories:
Military (current/former):
* Successful completion of a level 1 or level 2 sniper training program.
* Possess a combat arms occupational specialty in the U.S. Armed Forces.
* Served as a tactical operator (in a non-support or administrative role) in the U.S. Armed Forces.
* Successfully completed the requisite training course for a military special operations unit.
Law Enforcement (current/former):
* Served as a tactical operator (in a non-support or administrative role) in a U.S. Government special operations unit.
* Served as a member of a federal, state, or local law enforcement tactical team.
* Completed the requisite training course for a U.S. Government special operations unit or a federal, state, or local law enforcement tactical team.
Providing U.S. Military/law enforcement documentation satisfying one of the seven categories of specialized training in the "Ideal Candidate Section" above is recommended.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

As part of the application process the applicant will be required to complete the United States Secret Service Applicant Physical Abilities Test (APAT). It is a physical fitness assessment, which consists of four components (push-ups, sit-ups, Illinois Agility Run and a 1.5 Mile Run). The APAT is designed to measure the current level of general physical fitness of an applicant, which serves as an indicator of an applicant's ability to safely complete a vigorous physical training program. It evaluates an applicant's ability to perform the physical tasks required on the job by measuring muscular and dynamic strength, endurance, flexibility, aerobic capacity and other factors related to physical aptitude. The standards are anticipated to be the same regardless of age, gender or position.
General Medical Requirements:
As determined by the Office of Personnel Management, the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily. Since the duties of this position are exacting and involve the responsibility for the safety of others under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability.
Any condition that would hinder full, efficient performance of the duties of this position or that would cause the individual to be a hazard to himself/herself or to others is disqualifying. * Recruitment Incentive: Applicants may be eligible for a $60,000 recruitment incentive in accordance with regulatory requirements. The first installment of $15,000 will be paid following successful completion of Secret Service CS specialized training. A second installment of $15,000 will be paid following one year of service post specialized training and an acceptable performance rating. The third installment of $15,000 will be paid after a third year of service post specialized training and an acceptable performance rating. The final installment of $15,000 will be paid after a fourth year of service post specialized training and an acceptable performance rating. Provision of these payments require the execution of a four-year Continuing Service Agreement (CSA) with the agency. Newly hired employees who resign from the USSS prior to the expiration of the CSA will be required to repay the recruitment incentive. WORK SCHEDULE: Newly appointed Uniformed Division Officers normally work a 40-hour workweek on a set schedule (e.g., 6:30 am - 3:00 pm, 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm, or 10:30 pm - 7:00 am shifts). Workdays and shifts will vary depending on assignment and manpower requirements.
