The Tax Practice Group is seeking a tax associate with 4 or more years of tax experience. Ideal candidates will have experience handling a broad variety of federal, state and local tax matters as well as with startup tax issues, including qualified small business stock. Knowledge of general corporate law and M&A transactions is beneficial. Tax LL.M. preferred. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a team with an energetic practice spanning the nation. While we offer the flexibility to work remotely (hybrid), the preference is for the person filing this position to be based in Hanson Bridgett's San Francisco or Walnut Creek offices. The annual base compensation range for this California position is between $210,000 and $300,000. Placement within the salary range depends upon a number of factors including, but not limited to years of experience and professional skills required for this role.
Ideal candidates will have a distinguished academic background and impeccable references. CA Bar required. Strong research, writing and communication skills, high level of analytical skills as well as excellent and highly adaptable communication skills are required. This role is responsible for leading NRG's IRA Tax Credit advisory business within NRG's broader Renewable Advisory practice. The introduction of transferable tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act will redefine the tax equity markets over the coming years. NRG's customers pay billions of dollars in taxes to the federal government each year and are in a prime position to participate in this new market. The successful candidate will work with NRG customers (primarily Fortune 500), renewable energy developers, major banking institutions and other key partners to facilitate the execution of tax credit purchase agreements between the NRG customers and relevant counterparties. NRG currently leads the industry in innovative offsite renewable advisory and will use the existing customer base and infrastructure to accelerate the growth of the advisory practice.
Key Responsibilities:
Work with Renewable Advisory origination team to secure new tax equity clients for NRG
Help developer advisory platform and service offerings
Craft and implement transferable tax credit strategy for NRG clients
Network with developers and other tax credit owners in a continued effort to secure credits for NRG customers
Create appropriate model or work with developers to optimize their models in an effort to increase transferable tax credit availability
Diligence assets and tax qualification status for NRG customers and create brief summaries with finalized results and NRG recommendations
Support NRG clients in the negotiation of transferable tax credit purchase agreement

This is primarily an in-office position, then after an introductory period, has the potential to work remotely 1 to 2 days a week.
Purpose of the Role
In this role, you will focus tax engagements for our firm's individual and business clients. With your background, you add value for tax assignments from basic to moderate complexity, and you continuously and pro-actively participate in process improvement initiatives.
You'll have regular client contact, which means good client service skills are required, including the willingness and ability to recognize and respond to opportunities to provide expanded or new services to clients. You report to one of Crisler's Project Managers.
Your Responsibilities
You assist with gathering information from clients, completing assignments and coordinating with preparers and managers.
You monitor and report on assigned engagements' status and maintain open lines of communication with clients and supervisors regarding services.
You attend appointments with clients and assemble information to complete assignments.
You prepare and review federal, state and local tax returns and answer tax-related questions for clients together with the assistance, and under the direct supervision, of senior tax personnel.
You work diligently to resolve questions regarding the appropriate treatment of routine to moderately complex tax return matters.
In order for the firm to produce accurate billing, you maintain control of time and charges, and you participate in pricing and billing client services.
You work independently, you're able to make decisions on ordinary tax return matters, and produce a consistent amount of valuable work for our clients and your colleagues.
You perform basic tax planning, research, and consulting engagements as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or near completion required. Master's Degree and/or Licensed CPA or CPA-Candidate strongly preferred.
No experience required. One to three years of tax experience in a CPA firm strongly preferred.
Proficient with QuickBooks (Desktop & Online) and Microsoft Office.
You have great attention to detail, sound communication and analytical skills and the ability to advise your team and clients on services and solutions.
